The short version
VocabInText does not collect your personal information. Everything you read and every word you save stays on your own phone. The free plan shows ads from Google AdMob, and Google's ad software collects some device data to show them; VocabInText Pro has no ads. On Android, the app reports which steps of the first-time setup were reached (for example "finished the first text" or "saw the subscription screen"), so we can see where new users stop. Nothing about what you read, tapped or answered ever leaves your phone.
What stays on your device
- Which texts you have read and how many times
- The words you tapped and saved
- Your level, chosen language, interests and daily goal
- Your reminder preference and the hour you picked
- Your answers to the questions and in the word game, and the days you read, so the app can bring back your mistakes and show your weekly report
All of this is kept in a database on your phone. It is never uploaded. If you uninstall the app, it is gone. We cannot recover it, because we never had it.
What leaves your device
Nothing from your reading. Texts, the dictionary and questions are built into the app. Recordings of words, sentences and whole texts are downloaded from our file server (hosted by Cloudflare) when you open a text, and, on Pro, all at once over Wi-Fi so the app works offline. A download asks for one file by a code made from the word, sentence or text; it carries no account, name or device identifier, and we keep no record of who downloaded what. Like any web server, Cloudflare sees your IP address to send the file back (Cloudflare's privacy policy: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/). When a recording is not on your phone, your phone's own text-to-speech voice says the word instead. Reminders (including the one before a free trial ends) are scheduled on the phone itself. On the free plan the app checks whether your phone is online before opening a text; that check is done by the phone and sends nothing to us.
Purchases. If you subscribe, or start a free trial, the purchase is handled by the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). We use RevenueCat to check whether a subscription is active. Neither we nor RevenueCat receive your name, email address, or payment details: the stores do not share them with us. RevenueCat receives an anonymous identifier, your device's country and type, and the purchase record itself. RevenueCat's privacy policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy
Ads (free plan only). The free plan shows ads served by Google AdMob: a banner under some screens, an occasional full-screen ad when a text is finished, and a video ad you can choose to watch to open one more text. No ad appears before you finish your first text. To show ads, measure them and prevent fraud, Google's ad software (the Google Mobile Ads SDK) collects:
- your device's advertising ID
- your IP address, which Google uses to estimate your approximate location (country or city, never your precise location)
- device and app information, such as model, operating system and language
- crash and performance diagnostics of the ad software
- how you interact with ads (views and taps)
Google may share this data with its advertising partners as described in its own policy. In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, Google's consent form asks for your choice before any ad is requested, and you can change it any time in Settings, Ad privacy choices. On iPhone, the app asks whether it may use your device's advertising identifier; if you say no, ads are not personalised with it. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings. We ask AdMob for ads rated for teens and older (no sexual or gambling content). Nothing about what you read, the words you save or your answers is ever passed to the ad software. Google's policy: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
VocabInText Pro shows no ads and makes no ad requests.
Your name. If you type a name when you start, it is used only on your phone, in greetings and reminders. It is never sent anywhere.
Setup steps (Android only). The app tells RevenueCat, under the same anonymous identifier, the first time each step of getting started happens: each onboarding screen, finishing the first text and its questions, seeing the subscription screen, and tapping its buttons. Each step is a name and a time, nothing more. It also tells RevenueCat which days the app was opened (only the dates, for the most recent 40 days, and how many days in total). We use this only to count, per day, how many new users reach each step and how many come back on a later day. It also records whether the device is a phone or a tablet and, if you close the store's payment page without subscribing and answer our one-tap question, which of the three reasons you chose, and, on new installs, which of two ways of starting out the device was given (the usual free plan, or three days of Pro first), so the two can be compared. It is not shared with anyone else, not used for advertising, and not combined with data from other apps.
Crash reports and usage events. The app uses Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase Analytics (both by Google). If the app crashes or hits an error, a report leaves your device with the technical details needed to fix it: the stack trace, your device model and operating system, the app version and the update it was running, the name of the screen you were on, and the same anonymous identifier RevenueCat uses, so we can tell which setup step a crash belongs to. Analytics receives the same setup steps described above as named events, together with app opens, which screens of the app are opened (for example "reading screen" or "subscription screen", never which text), device information and an app-instance identifier; on Android it may also receive the advertising ID. We use this to find and fix crashes and to count how many new users reach each step and screen; nothing about what you read, save or answer is included. What we do not do
- No accounts, no sign-up, no email address
- No ads for Pro subscribers
- No record of what you read, which words you tap, or how you answer
- No selling of your data
- No tracking of you by us; on the free plan, Google's ad software works as described above
- No reading of your contacts, photos, files, precise location, microphone or camera
Children
The app is meant for teens and adults (13 and older). It collects no personal information itself, and the free plan's ads are limited to content rated for teens.
Your rights
We hold nothing that identifies you: the setup steps are tied only to an anonymous identifier that we cannot link to a person. To remove everything the app has stored on your phone, use Settings, Reset progress, or uninstall the app. For data collected by Google's ad software, use the ad choices above or Google's own controls. Questions or deletion requests can be sent to the address below.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at the same address and the date above will change.
